Miami’s Cineworks Adds DI Theater

Cineworks Digital Studios in Miami, Florida, has recently added a digital-intermediate theater powered by Assimilate’s Scratch. “We work in a variety of formats — 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm and HD — so we were in the market for a data-centric workflow that could handle any resolution, both input and output,” says Vinny Hogan, founder and co-owner. “We also wanted to create a 2K DI theater for client reviews, reviews of dailies, and real-time color correction — a bit of everything.”

Cineworks’ DI theater features a 14'x7' screen and is equipped with an NEC 2K digital projector and Assimilate’s Scratch all-in-one, data-centric system that includes real-time, multi-resolution review/playback, assemble/edit, conform, primary color grading, audio, visual effects, data management and final output to film or HD. Cineworks recently completed DI work on the indie feature The Way Back Home, which was shot in Super 35mm. The negative was scanned using the Kodak TCS (Telecine Calibration System) to 1920x1080 high-definition video and recorded to an HDCam SR deck over a dual-link connection with full 4:4:4 chroma sampling. The DPX files were then conformed and color corrected with Scratch in the 2K DI theater.
