Since 2005, Deakins has freely shared his opinions and advice in a forum on his website. “Most of my comments end with, ‘There are no rules,’” he says. “Every shot and every movie is different. There’s no right and wrong. Cinematography is personal; it’s something you have to develop yourself, and there’s no easy way to do that. It’s just a matter of spending time on your own and finding it. You can’t learn it from somebody else. It’s not just technique. In fact, it’s less about technique and more about a way of seeing.”
