  Billy endures a sit-down with Costello’s most loyal and lethal underling, Mr. French (Ray Winstone). To maintain a high-contrast, stylized look, Ballhaus bounced light off the show’s tabletops. “We were always teasing Michael about it, because there’s that other guy who’s shot for Scorsese who likes hot tabletops,” says gaffer Andy Day, referring to Robert Richardson, ASC (The Aviator, Bringing Out the Dead, Casino).
