  Set prior to the widespread use of electricity, The Village features many firelit scenes. “All of the lighting for night scenes was tungsten-based, and I was often balancing everything to candlelight,” says Deakins. “Oil lamps and candles were the only justification we had for light in the village, although every now and again we created a little moonlight in the background. Early on, Night said he didn’t want to see everything — the point of the film is the mystery of the place — so I often left the image very sketchy and dark.” (image 1 of 2)
