Shakespeare’s ill-fated Scotsman (Jon Finch, Image 1 of 3) grapples with destiny in The Tragedy of Macbeth (1971), which Taylor shot in vivid color and Todd AO-35 widescreen. Directed by Roman Polanski and principally photographed on location in the Northumberland region of England and along the coast of Wales, the Playboy Productions project seemed to suffer from the “curse” long said to plague stage productions of the Bard’s bloody play. In the film’s case, this bad luck manifested itself largely in the form of inclement weather. Taylor (Image 3 of 3) recalls, “We were battered by wind, cold and rain and nightly frost, but my crew was wonderful and braved the elements.” Castle interiors featuring the scheming Lady Macbeth (Francesca Annis, above) were filmed in the more comfortable confines of Shepperton Studios (Image 2 of 3)
