The exterior of the Paper Street home was created in San Pedro, California. “We tried to stay away from the traditonal huge backlight sources and the blue moonlight look, says Cronenweth. “Most of our lights were kept pretty white. In San Pedro there are a lot of sodium-vapor lights that take on the orangey hue, so if we did occasionally use a backlight, we’d often balance our lights to the sodium vapors and play it as another street lamp. For the house exterior, I used an 8K Tungsten balloon, which allowed us to get the light out of the frame easily and get us a base exposure that was about 2 to 2 and one-half stops under. We also surrounded the house with 20K’s and some of Claudio’s DecaLights.”
