by Interviews by Mark Dillon, Kathleen Fairweather,

Anyone who loves movies can recall that one special film that made a lasting impression. For some, however, that momentous motion picture can provoke an epiphany: That's what I want to do with my life.

Recently, several AC writers asked eight ASC members — Hiro Narita, John Hora, Theo Van de Sande, Sandi Sissel, Donald M. Morgan, Wayne Kennan, Ken Kelsch and Francis Kenny — to reminisce about the films that had a special impact upon their lives and careers. All of their selections were interesting and unpredictable, and each director of photography offered an enthusiastic and thoughtful response. Collectively, the group's insights reiterate the notion that film is truly a universal language whose diverse array of themes can speak to viewers from a variety of different backgrounds.

Following are the eight cinematographer's responses, listed in the chronological order of the films they selected.
