Hughes is critically injured when he crashes in Beverly Hills while test-flying his experimental XF-11 plane. Allowing the environment to dictate his approach to this sequence, Richardson created extreme contrast by juxtapositioning dark areas of the frame with blooming highlights and flames. While shooting from a 30' camera crane, the cinematographer says he felt stunt flames “completely engulf” his perch. “Even though I had full fireproof attire on, it was hot enough to singe my eyebrows,” he recalls. “Sadly, the laces on my vintage Converse sneakers were burned completely.” (Image 1 of 2) |
