Batman intimidates Dr. Jonathan Crane, a.k.a. The Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy). Lighting Batman’s matte-black costume presented some challenges for Pfister. “Since I knew that the suit was going to be very non-reflective, I thought we’d spend a lot of time silhouetting Batman against backgrounds rather than trying to light the material up,” he says. “Ultimately, though, I did find ways to light the suit. When we weren’t in steam or smoke, I found that a very soft backlight created a nice foundation of light on him, and I also used a side key source quite a bit. To give Christian some eyelight, or to add some fill, I used a Kino Flo Kamio light. It attaches around the camera lens, but I very rarely used it that way; I always put it on an arm hanging off the camera, which allowed us to move it to one side or the other. In fact, in some situations I used more backlight and no fill at all, just the Kamio for highlights.”
