Atomos Updates For Nikon Use

ProRes RAW is now possible with Z7 and Z6 full-frame mirrorless cameras using the Ninja V monitor/recorder.

Announced during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Atomos, which also began trade on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in late December, has unlocked Apple ProRes RAW capture on the Ninja V 4K HDR monitor and recorder when using the latest Nikon full-frame mirrorless still-camera solutions, the Z6 and Z7. Currently capable of full-frame in 10-bit, 422 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx at frame rates of up to 60 fps using HDMI output, the Ninja V was unveiled during IBC 2018 in September.

“It’s a really exciting time for high-quality cinematic video on every platform from Facebook to Netflix,” Atomos CEO and cofounder Jeromy Young said in via press release. “Our customers are increasingly making their livings creating this content and we love giving them the affordable tools they need to do it. Our $695 Ninja V delivers better image quality without sacrificing amazing features like autofocus and high-megapixel stills.”

Several modules are also already available for the Ninja V to allow extended features, including multi-camera sync, remote control and ethernet-based video transmission capabilities. With removable SSD, the recorder system is complemented by a touchscreen 5" HDR monitor with PQ and HLG display for HDR needs, and HD and SD options. To suppor the AtomHDR Mode with 10 stops of dynamic range and daytime viewing, the FRC—frame rate control — IPS screen has a high brightness of 1,000 nits.

Atomos is also planning on bundling the Ninja V with the Nikon Z6 camera and peripherals including the MOZA Air 2 3-axis handheld gimbal, Rode VideoMic Pro+ and NIKKOR Z 24-70mm (f4) S lens as the Nikon Z6 Filmmaker Kit, available at $3,999.

After their $6m IPO debut at $0.41 per share, Atomos stated in their commencement that their current core range of seven products is expected to double within the next 12-24 months. Citing key strategic relationships with Apple, Adobe, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and JVC Kenwood, the company’s 2018 revenue registered at $35.6m, which is forecasted to increase to $42.2m.

The Apple ProRes RAW capability was on display during CES at Nikon’s booth, but Atomos has not offered a delivery date as of yet. With products for the entire range of M&E industries, the company claims the title as being first with a monitor and recorder that can support Apple ProRes.
