With attached Distagon 35mm f/2 T* lens, the Zeiss ZX1 full-frame camera is the company’s first in-house imager. Shooting UHD at up to 30fps and SHD at up to 60fps, unlike many other imaging sensors in a market largely dominated by Sony, the 37.4-megapixel sensor has been developed by Zeiss themselves.

Able to upload directly to the Internet, internal WiFi and Bluetooth are included for wireless operations. Adobe’s packaged Lightroom CC image editing software provides RAW edits for photography, and the camera will also have 512 GB of internal memory, enough space for roughly 6,800 DNGs or over 50,000 JPGs.

"We know that we exploring new ways and initially addressing a special target group with the Zeiss ZX1. With our concept we are focusing on ambitious, professional creatives who want to produce their photographic experiences quickly and efficiently, and inspire as many people on the Internet as possible," explains Jörg Schmitz, Head of Consumer Products, Business Group, at Zeiss, via the announcement. "This requires a streamlined workflow in addition to high-end features. This is exactly what the concept of the ZX1 offers."

The 4.3" multi-touch menu screen has been “slightly bent” to best match the ergonomics and handling of the ZX1, as well as to separate live view operations from other controls. Pricing will be available with the cameras, which should start to see delivery to select dealers starting in early 2019.

In May, Zeiss released a new set of 13 full-frame cinema optics with the Zeiss Supreme Primes. In 2017, they updated their full-frame Milvus family with two new models, the Milvus 35mm (f1.4) and the Milvus 25mm (f1.4).
