Sachtler Ace XL

First announced on June 26, the Sachtler Ace XL fluid head bolsters the popular Ace L tripod systems (which will continue to be available) with an extra 2kg (4.4 lbs) of maximum capacity. Sized to accommodate mid-range cameras —  including the Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro, Canon EOS C200/C300 Mark II, Sony FS series and the upcoming Panasonic AU-AVA1 — the Ace XL fluid head will support 17.6 lbs over the previously available 13.2 maximum payload in the Ace L, also with eight-step counterbalance and zero-step or three-level Synchronised Actuated “SA” pan-and-tilt drag.

Sitting atop 75mm bowl with +90° to -75° tilt and illuminated spirit level, the Ace XL also includes the $76 10.8” Sachtler Pan Bar, universally compatible with Sachtler Ace-family tripods. The original Ace L as well as the new Ace XL fluid heads can also be converted to a flat base for use with sliders and other motion devices. There is 4.1” sliding range on the included Sachtler Sideload Plate S/Ace Tripod QR Plate, which is compatible with the Sachtler DV-1, FSB 2, FSB 4, FSB 6, FSB 8 and select FSV 10 fluid heads for those already invested in Sachtler tripod systems. For replacements, the Sideload Plate S/Ace Tripod quick release plate is also available optionally at $74.

Available on its own at a starting price of $499, the Ace XL fluid head can be purchased ready-to-go with tripod legs in the same three configurations previously available with the Ace L fluid head. (For smaller systems like DSLRs of up to 8.8 lbs, Sachtler also has a similar line at more affordable pricing in the $621 Ace M two-stage aluminum fluid tripod kit.) The $1,299 Ace XL TT (Model 1013XL), as in “telescopic tripod,” offers the most travel in the series at 16.9” to 73.2”. It folds to 35” to stow with included padded case. There are three leg settings at 23°, 50°, and 70°.

With two-stage, three-section leg designs, the other two models in the Ace XL line, the Ace XL MS and Ace XL GS CF carbon-fiber tripods, give you a choice between “mid-level” and “ground-level” spreaders, respectively. With 31.1” to 66.9” of support, the $1,009 Ace XL MS CF (Model 1018C) weighs roughly half a pound less than the $1,092 Ace XL GS CF (Model 1019C), which offers 22.1” to 68.1” of travel. Otherwise, both Ace XL CF kits are identical. Pricing on the three models that come with the Ace L fluid head is comparable: $1,406 for the Ace L TT 75/2 and $1,092 for each of the two Ace L CF GS/MS tripods.
