Clubhouse Conversations — Fingernails

In this episode, cinematographer Marcell Rév, ASC, HCA is joined by interviewer Amy Vincent, ASC to discuss his work on Fingernails — a science-fiction romantic drama about a woman who works at an institute that tests whether the love between couples is actually real.

Fingernails tells the story of Anna (Jessie Buckley), an unemployed schoolteacher who lands a new job as an instructor at a start-up company whose staff helps couples practice relationship-building exercises. Prior to the inception of the company, which its founder calls The Love Institute, a test was developed that allows two people to determine whether they're truly in love with one another based on one fingernail sample; The Love Institute's goal is to achieve more positive test results for couples.

In this interview, Rév discusses shooting on film; his process for coloring dailies; his methods for elevating shadows; how he helped make actors feel comfortable during production; his approach to lighting scenes set inside of cars, and more.
