Clubhouse Conversations — Sentimental Value

In this episode, cinematographer Kasper Tuxen, DFF is joined by interviewer Patrick Cady, ASC to discuss his work on Sentimental Value — a familial drama from director Joachim Trier that explores an acclaimed film director's strained relationship with his daughters.

Sentimental Value sees filmmaker Gustav Borg (Stellan Skårsgard) attempt to reconnect with his estranged daughters — Nora (Renate Reinsve), an actor, and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), an historian — by making a personal film about their fraught family history. The film marks Tuxen's second feature collaboration with Trier, following their work together on The Worst Person in the World.

Conversation Highlights

Tuxen's conversation with Cady explores a range of strategies, as well as the creative and practical challenges he encountered, including:

  • Developing a visual language for the film inspired by Nordic light, and the works of Andrei Tarkovsky
  • How shooting on multiple film stocks and emphasizing handheld camera moves helped balance the film's alternately realistic and poetic sensibilities
  • How he approached and executed pivotal sequences set in a theater and on a train, as well as a nighttime scene shot on France's Deauville Beach
  • Conveying a sense of passing time over a period decades through the use of in-camera effects, a bleach-bypass process and evolving color palettes
  • Rooting his approach to the production in empathy, authenticity and the spirit of collaboration

Kasper Tuxen, DFF is a cinematographer whose feature credits include The Worst Person in the World (2021) and The Apprentice (2024).
