Featuring a 20x zoom, these new 1080p compact units offer AVCHD or MP4 recording.
Each featuring a 20x (26.8mm-576mm) optical zoom lens, CMOS Sensor and DIGIC DV4 image processors, Canon has released new handhelds: the (at top, from left) XA15, VIXIA HF G21 and XA11. While the XA15 and XA11 include XLR, as well as additional HD-SDI output on the XA15, each also comes with HDMI, headphone jack and internal GPS, as well as 60p HD capture at up to 35 Mbps.
“The ability to capture high-quality video on-the-go in a compact and lightweight form factor is extremely valuable to videographers of all skill levels,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc, in the press release. “These camcorders were designed to help professionals and enthusiasts who are in the field capture action as it happens.”
Each of the three units record in AVCHD or MP4 formats with dual- and relay-capture available in multiple bit rates thanks to two SD card slots. All three also have an Hi-UD Ultra-low Dispersion lens element to compensate for chromatic aberration. Correcting for roll axis, horizontal roll, vertical roll, up-down and left-right, a Dynamic Mode is also provided for 5-axis image stabilization during fast-action shots.
Additionally, Canon’s Wide DR compresses high luminance values to suppress overexposure and enhance dynamic range when shooting in areas of high contrast. A Slow/Fast Segment mode unlocks shooting speeds from 0.4x to 1,200x. The three camcorders are identical in performance, however the Canon Vixia HF G21 does not come with a handle.
The XA15 tops off the line at $1,899, while the XA11 and Vixia HF G21 will be offered at $1,399 and $999, respectively.
