Red Raven Kit Made Available Through Apple

Available for demonstration through select Apple Retail stores, Red Digital Cinema has announced that their Red Raven 4.5K camera will be exclusively available for purchase online at Apple.com. Red previously announced the Red Raven camera and associated kit purchases in September of 2015 before pulling it from their website due to demand.

Available now at Apple.com for $14,999, Red says the kit will have “everything cinematographers need to start shooting, including lens, media, batteries, software and more.” Featuring kitted components from several respected brands that have often developed products specifically accommodating Red designs, the Red Raven Camera Kit purchase comes with two new battery models from IDX, the Duo-C98, as well as IDX VL-2X charger. 

A customized Nanuk heavy-duty case, typically available at more than $900, is also included, as is Apple’s $299 Final Cut Pro X editing software. While Red supplies an 120GB Mini-Mag SSD drive, G-Technology is bundling their ev Series Red Mini-Mag card reader for direct transfer of video files to computers or compatible G-Tech “ev”, as in “Evolution,” and other series drives, which have automated storage and available monitoring playback through SATA or other connections with adapter. 

Based around the 3.5 lbs Red Raven 4.5K camera “brain,” the Red Raven camera specs include 16 stops of dynamic range alongside 4.5K resolution at up to 120 fps and HFR 240 fps when shooting at 2K. Small enough for use with drones, gimbals and handheld rigs, the camera can capture in Red’s Redcode raw format concurrently with Apple ProRes, or to Avid’s DNxHD. A plugin is available for Final Cut Pro that will run Red’s Redcode files natively.

From focus to curves to settings, the foolcontrol Raven Camera Kit app is available free of charge on the iTunes store for full controls over Raven systems that have been purchased after this last July 31. (Packaging the same features, the original foolcontrol app for Weapon, Epic-W, Raven and Scarlet-W cameras is still available at $169.) 

Available on its own for $799 street, the Red Raven Camera Kit also comes with the full frame, EF-mount Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens. (See here more about Sigma’s latest lenses, including two new Cine Prime series models, the Sigma 14mm (T2) FF and 135mm (T2) FF). 

In addition to the Red Raven brain and Mini-Mag, the Red Raven Camera Kit also comes with Red’s 4.7” DSMC2 Touch LCD monitor and DSMC2 Outrigger handle with mounting points and record button. The included V-Lock I/O Expander module provides power and ins-and-outs, including HDMI, 3G-SDI/HD-SDI, LEMO 4-pin, and 3.5mm jack. 

While $14,999 may seem steep for an entry-level camera, the Red accessories alone amount to a list of $4,750, while the original Red Raven brain started at a list price of $5,950. Red is known for providing these kinds of bundled purchases, as well, and it also makes a lot of business sense to bring Red and Apple acolytes together, especially as Red announced their very own branded smartphone system, the Red Hydrogen One, which promises holographic playback of VR, AR, and MR media as well as stereo 3D and gaming, on July 5.

No word on when the Apple Store demos will be available. As of last month, Red cameras and accessories are finally available through Adorama and B&H, as well. While Red had stated that orders were not able to be filled in pace with demand of the original Red Raven release, Apple is promising free business delivery within just a few days.
