Atomos Ninja V

Two new modules further enhance new monitor and recorder for 10-bit, 422 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx.

Supporting the latest mirrorless class of still shooters with 10-bit, 422 color over HDMI output and extensive Log gammas curves — such as the Canon EOS R, Fuji X-T3, Nikon Z6/Z7, Panasonic GH5/GH5S and Sony A7 III/A7R III models — the $695 Atomos 4K Ninja V HDMI monitor and recorder made its European debut at IBC 2018 in September (13-17).

Atomos capture and playback devices like the Ninja V record quality 4K video directly from the camera in Apple ProRes or Avid DNx at frame rates of up to 60 fps. To enable connection to legacy as well as future-proof wired and wireless technologies, the Ninja V also has a AtomX expansion module system, promising further functionality through a proprietary data/audio/video port.

Starting with two compatible modules to support the AtomX expansion, Atomos has already followed up with the $149 AtomX Sync Module at IBC for audio and video timecode synchronization using WiFi. It also adds Bluetooth control for the Ninja V.

The AtomX Sync Module wirelessly links multiple cameras when each is attached to a Ninja V. Useful for events and sports coverage, thousands of Ninja V units equipped with AtomX Sync modules to any HDMI camera or source can be used on the same network at ranges of up to 300m. There is built-in battery extension for hot-swap of batteries.

The second solution, the $199 AtomX Ethernet/NDI Module, adds an Ethernet connection and output into the expansion slot of the Ninja V. The 1 GigE connection will run multiple cam,  live broadcast-grade video, providing networking for wired, professional, NDI-based, IP-driven video infrastructures. It supports NDI inputs and outputs from cameras with 12G/6G/3G/1.5G or SDI/HDMI equipment at up to 4Kp60 and HDp240 by downscaling to HDp60 or lower.

NewTek’s NDI (Network Device Interface) technology gives input and output with encode, decode, control and sync, allowing users to transmit, distribute or receive and monitor from any NDI source. NDI has been adapted by several providers, like Adobe Premiere Pro CC through an Adobe Creative Cloud plug in.

The Ninja V has 5" 1000nit screen for more than 10 stops of dynamic range. It can play out to HDR or Rec.709 monitors from Log curves, PQ and HLG HDR formats.

Other monitor recorders in the Atomos range have also seen recent innovation. Apple ProRes RAW support has been added to the 7” Shogun Inferno and 19” Sumo devices. Both can now record up to ProRes RAW, currently at 5.7K from the Panasonic EVA1 and 4k from a range of other cinema cameras, as well as 4K CDNG RAW, ProRes and Avid DNx.
