The Red Hydrogen One Media Player and Smartphone

Red has announced a new media player and remote control system, the Red Hydrogen One, which will offer holographic, 3D and 2D content playback “in the palm of your hand.”

Following a forum post yesterday from Red founder Jim Jannard teasing a new product, Red has today announced Hydrogen One, a holographic media player available in aluminum at $1,195 or titanium at $1,595 for a “limited time only”, as they are not guaranteeing the price after the initial batch of units, available now, has been preordered. Red has promised a target ship of the first quarter in 2018.

“You need to be online. You need to tell everyone you know to be online. Have your credit card ready,” Jannard teased in the original post, going on to say that the new category would not impact Red cameras directly. Promising “the future of personal communication,” the Hydrogen One is a smartphone based on Google’s Android OS. Red is saying that the 5.7” holographic display will be able to switch between 2D content, holographic multi-view (supporting VR, AR and MR), stereo 3D and interactive gaming in both landscape or portrait viewing.

Holographic format and 3D content files will be played back as Red Hydrogen 4-View files (.h4v). Using proprietary H3O algorithms, stereo sound will be converted into “multi-dimensional” audio that can simulate a 5.1 surround-sound experience via headphones. The Hydrogen One is also planned as a remote control center for the Hydrogen system, with promised integration with Scarlet, Epic and Weapon interfaces and monitoring systems. Red says that the media player is modular, as well, for the development and attachment of future accessories for the media player or for the Red-system cameras or peripherals. The Hydrogen One includes USB-C cable with charger as well as expandable Micro SD card slot.

A “special small token” will also come with early orders.
