Marking the eighth year of American Cinematographer’s annual roster of emerging directors of photography.

On the evening of August 8, the ASC and American Cinematographer welcomed this year’s class of six Rising Stars of Cinematography to the Clubhouse in Hollywood for an official reception of congratulations, led by ASC president Shelly Johnson.

Chosen this year by a blue-ribbon committee of ASC members and AC staff to join the Rising Stars ranks were Bill Kirstein, Ava Benjamin Shorr, Paul Yee, Jo Jo Lam, Xiaolong Liu and Eric Yue. (You’ll find complete profiles on each filmmaker here.)

This year’s reception was generously supported by Cinelease, ShotDeck, Ignite Strategic Communications and, of course, the ASC.

Cinelease is providing each of the six Rising Stars with $20,000 in credit toward a lighting package to be used for their next production.

ShotDeck supplied each with special three-year access to their massive motion-picture image reference database and library system, as well as a Tuesday Drop of a project of their choosing.

Over the years, several past Rising Stars cinematographers have gone on to become ASC members, including Kira Kelly, Quyen Tran, and, most recently, Cybel Martin, who also attended this Clubhouse event.
