ASC Hosts Photo Gallery
The exhibit, curated by Leica Gallery L.A. director Paris Chong, showcased photographs by 49 Society members.
The ASC held the opening of its latest Photo Gallery on Nov. 8 at the Society's Clubhouse, where the photographs of 49 Society members were on display, with proceeds from their sales going to
the Vision Committee fund for ASC Master Class scholarships.
Lining the walls were photographs created by ASC members including Alice Brooks, Russell Carpenter, Richard Crudo, Caleb Deschanel, Frederick Elmes, Markus Förderer, Shelly Johnson, Kira Kelly, Dan Laustsen, Phedon Papamichael, Nancy Schreiber, Roberto Schaefer, John Simmons, and Charlie Lieberman,
who serves as chair of the ASC Photo Gallery Committee. Gear choices ranged from still cameras from Canon, Leica, Nikon and Sony to Kodak film and Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhones, along with a range of lenses.
The exhibit was curated by Paris Chong, director of the Leica Gallery L.A.

John Simmons, ASC, who is among the cinematographers whose work was featured in the gallery, told American Cinematographer, “It’s a very important exhibit, because it actually changes people's lives.” He notes that “This and our awards [ceremony] are my two favorite events at the ASC. But the reason why this one is so important is because the proceeds that we receive from the sale of photographs go to scholarships for the Master Class. We reach out to underserved students and professionals, and it helps them be able to participate in the [Master Class] program.”

Simmons added that of the range of work he observed, “What’s interesting is that all of us, because of our life experiences, have a way of seeing, framing an image, or just communicating with the camera. And what you have here is you have a group of cinematographers that has made some of the most incredible movies ever made, and these people take the time to tell a story with one frame. It's wonderful to see the point of view of cinematographers telling that kind of story.”

During a reception hosted by Canon, guests enjoyed a preview of the new photo exhibit while enjoying drinks and hors d’oeuvres and catching up with fellow cinematographers and guests.
Limited-edition prints and box sets of the gallery photography will be available through the ASC Store.
