May ASC Master Class Wraps: Lighting and Virtual Production

The ASC’s signature education program returned to in-person instruction with a session held on May 9-13, after being on hiatus due to Covid-19. (During this time, the program transitioned to online instruction, which will also continue.) The Master Class Committee is chaired by members Shelly Johnson and Charlie Lieberman, who programmed the session. Thirty students attended, and the primary ASC instructors included David Stockton, David Klein and Robert D. Yeoman.

The five days of in-depth discussion and demonstration included historical film analysis instructed by Michael M. Pessah, ASC, with other components taught by Society members Lieberman, Patrick Cady, Christopher Chomyn, Nathaniel Goodman, Mark Irwin, Christopher Probst, Tami Reiker, Mikael Salomon and Steven Shaw, as well as associate members Joshua Pines and Joachim “JZ” Zell.

While the majority of the session took place at the Society’s Clubhouse in Hollywood, Calif., a special day on shooting in LED volumes was staged at Monolith Studios in Burbank, coordinated by Bobby Finley and Fred Waldman, and also featured a presentation by virtual-production supervisor Ian Milham from Industrial Light & Magic. A section on designing a reel and attaining an agent was moderated by Ann Murphy of ICM Partners
