Clubhouse Conversations — Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

In this episode, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos, BSC, GSC, is joined by interviewer and ASC President Shelly Johnson to discuss his work on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — director Tim Burton’s follow-up to his revered 1988 gothic horror-comedy Beetlejuice.

In Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the eccentric Deetz family returns to the town of Winter River in the aftermath of a tragedy. Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega) — the rebellious daughter of Lydia (Winona Ryder) — soon discovers a portal to the afterlife, causing the mischievous ghost Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to re-enter and wreak havoc upon their world.

In this interview, Zambarloukos discusses collaborating with Burton to develop the film’s visual style; the production's use of practical effects, such as stop-motion animation and back-projection screens, to enhance its "handmade" feel; experimenting with infrared photography; how his use of anamorphic lenses complemented the film's 1.85:1 aspect ratio, and more.

Haris Zambarloukos, BSC, GSC is a cinematographer whose works include A Haunting in Venice (2023), Death on the Nile (2022), Belfast (2021), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Cinderella (2015) and Mamma Mia! (2008).
