Fallout began as a postapocalyptic role-playing video game for your computer back in 1997, created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky at Interplay Entertainment. Following the first three games (Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics), the franchise found its way to a wider audience with Fallout 3 (2004) when it moved to Xbox and PlayStation 2. To date, there are now almost a dozen games in the series, with a 12th — Fallout 5 — announced to be in development. Given the near 30-year run of the franchise and its enduring popularity, it's no surprise that it was adapted into a live-action series.
The Amazon production, simply titled Fallout, made its debut on April 10, 2024, and has been well received (94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 90 percent audience score). The series was developed by Kilter Films (Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy) and Bethesda Game Studios. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are the series' showrunners.
The series was shot by four cinematographers: Stuart Dryburgh, ASC, NZCS (who handled four of the 10 episodes); Teodoro Maniaci (3 episodes); Alejandro Martínez (2); and Dan Stoloff (1) handled the balance.
The cast is led by Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten and Walton Goggins, but also features Matt Berry, Michael Emerson and Kyle MacLachlan.
The story follows heroine Lucy (Purnell) as she leaves the safety of her bomb-shelter bunker to trek the post-nuclear wasteland in search of her father (MacLachlan), and the history of how the apocalypse came to be is explained through a series of flashbacks about Hollywood cowboy star Cooper Howard (Goggins).
