Ultra-Wide Rokinon 14mm F2.8 Lens
Company's fifth autofocus lens model for Canon EF mount
Company's fifth AF lens model for Canon EF mount.
Just three months after the 35mm (F1.4) full-frame lens for Sony E mount, Rokinon released another autofocus model, their fifth, with the $999 14mm (F2.8). Their first AF lens to be available for Canon EF, the prime is also the only lens from Rokinon to sport weather sealing. Offered as an affordable alternative to professional and “luxury” ultra-wide lenses, the Rokinon 14mm (F2.8) has rounded seven-blade aperture.
With 116.6-degree angle of view, the lens holds 15 elements in 10 groups, including one Extra-Low Dispersion, two Aspherical, and four High-Refractive Index lens elements. UMC (Ultra Multi-Coating) anti-reflective coatings also minimize aberration. Lens construction includes an all metal housing and Manual/AF switch. Though it is full-frame, the Canon EF lens is compatible with Canon EF-S Super 35-sized APS-C sensors at approximately 22.4mm (depending on sensor) for an equivalent angle-view of 92.8 degrees in 35mm.
The lens has minimum focusing distance of 7.8" and a magnification ratio of x0.15. As an ultra-wide, there is no filter thread, and lens petals are affixed. A compact wide angle, the Rokinon 14mm (F2.8) measures at 3.8" with a weight of 17.1oz (485g). In early January, they also announced the 35mm (F1.4) AF at $799. Previously they released the $599 Rokinon Cine DS 16mm (T2.6) super-wide angle lens, which joined the Rokinon Cine DS line of manual-focus cinema lenses.
Rokinon is produced by Korean lens company Samyang Optics. Samyang has several similar focal lengths under their own brand, including a line of Cine Lenses with declicked apertures for Sony, Canon, Nikon and Micro Four Thirds mounts.
