Colorist Peter Doyle — HDR, Vintage Workflows, Etiquette
A video edit of colorist Peter Doyle speaking about HDR, color, the film print legacy and post-production etiquette, from footage shot at an AFC event in Paris.
Recently, I was fortunate to see master colorist Peter Doyle participate in the AFC conference on HDR in Paris. Peter spoke intelligently, incisively and honestly about a wide range of topics including HDR (High Dynamic Range), vintage workflows, film print emulation, color spaces, tone mapping and the new etiquette of managing post-production looks.
My friends at the AFC (the French Society of Cinematographers) kindly agreed to let me edit and present footage that they shot of Peter's presentation. (Peter was the only English-language speaker).
This is the first of two posts. Here Peter speaks about HDR, colors, the film print legacy and managing the “content intent” with the four “voices” of the production company, the studio, marketing and display manufacturers.

Video of Peter’s Presentation
The nine-minute video below is my edit of footage shot by Pauline Maillet of the presentation. Peter was wearing headphones to hear translations of the other French speakers. I decided not to grade the footage, as I like the warm tones as is — besides, who am I to grade Peter Doyle? :)
As Peter notes, the views expressed are his own.
