EnergaCAMERIMAGE Fest Pays Tribute to Nykvist

Panel discussion featuring ASC members takes place on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 3:45 p.m. in Screening Room 10 at Cinema City.

The 30th annual EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography — taking place Nov. 12- Nov. 19. in Toruń, Poland — will honor the memory of legendary Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist, ASC, FSF with a special “American Cinematographer Presents” seminar on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 3:45 p.m. (15:45) in Screening Room 10 at the Cinema City Toruń theater complex.


The session will include AC editor-in-chief Stephen Pizzello and longtime contributor Benjamin B. They will screen numerous clips from Nykvist’s films, including Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Scenes From a Marriage, The Magic Flute, Cries and Whispers, The Tenant and Fanny and Alexander.

ASC members Charlotte Bruus Christensen and Edward Lachman will offer professional insight on Nykvist's camerawork and its lasting influence.


As a part of this tribute, the festival is screening Cries and Whispers (for which Nykvist earned his first Academy Award, in 1973), immediately prior to the panel, in the same Cinema City theater room, beginning at 1:30 p.m. (13:30) on Nov. 17.

Nykvist was honored with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 and died in 2006.
