Chuck Minsky, ASC, chair of the Society's Awards Committee, revealed the nominees for the 40th ASC Awards on Thursday morning during a breakfast at the ASC Clubhouse, which was also livestreamed. Attendees including members, publicists, sponsors and other guests mingled over a light breakfast as the noms were announced (the complete list of nominees can be found here). It was a thrill for nominees, including some first-timers, as they learned of the prestigious recognition for their work.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC earned her first feature-category nomination on the strength of writer-director Ryan Coogler’s Mississippi Delta-set horror film, Sinners. "Being acknowledged by my peers, people whose work has shaped my own, is a milestone I don’t take lightly,” she said following the announcement. "I’m deeply moved to be a part of this group of cinematographers and I share this recognition with my entire team. We’re so proud of the film and so honored for this ASC nomination.”

Calling his nomination a “dream come true,” Adolpho Veloso, ABC, AIP wrote, "I don’t know what to say — it’s not everyday that you are in the same list with some of your heroes. I’m so happy and thankful to the ASC, and I'm honored to be nominated alongside such an incredible list of artists. I share this nomination with my entire crew, our director Clint Bentley, and everyone else behind and in front of the camera who helped bring our beautiful film to life." Veloso was nominated for director/co-writer Bentley’s Train Dreams, based on Denis Johnson’s novella about Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a man whose life unfolds during an era of unprecedented change in early 20th-century America.

On his nomination for the cinematography of One Battle After Another — writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, which follows an ex-revolutionary (Leonardo DiCaprio) and was inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland — Michael Bauman said: "It’s such an honor when your peers recognize your work in this way, and it’s even more meaningful to me because this film was such an incredible and wonderful challenge. Shooting in VistaVision was not something I’d imagined doing, but what a thrill we had, discovering all that [the format] has to offer an artist. And being able to collaborate with a master filmmaker like Paul Thomas Anderson along the way was unforgettable. I’m so proud to stand among my fellow nominees this year, and I congratulate them all.”

The feature category nominees also include Darius Khondji, ASC, AFC for Marty Supreme, Josh Safdie’s table tennis comedy-drama starring Timothée Chalamet and Dan Laustsen, ASC, DFF for Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Following the announcement, Minsky said at the Clubhouse, "I think it's really good year. I think the work is beautiful; it's very varied.”

“It was another great year for cinematography,” agreed past ASC president Richard Crudo, who was also at the Clubhouse. He noted that this is the time of year "when all the cream rises to the top and we see the best of what's out there and what everyone's up to. And this was no exception.” He also reflected on the 40th anniversary of the awards, which were co-founded by Woody Omens, ASC and Michael D. Margulies, ASC — noting that first ASC Awards were presented at the Clubhouse, with Gregory Peck as its master of ceremonies.

Additional guests for the announcement included Mackinley Sullivan of EBComs PR. “It’s a really special moment when you get to celebrate with your community at in-person events," she said. "I'm always grateful for the ASC to host this nomination [event] live each year, because you really get to feel the joy and camaraderie in the room.”

"It's great to be here at the Clubhouse to be part of the nominations [announcement],” added Sony’s Dan Perry, who looks forward to the March ceremony. "The work is amazing. It covers so many different genres, and so many different works are being represented, from film to digital."
