Eric Branco, ASC cites visits to “the great museums of New York” and several New York City Public School teachers as key influences in his formative years — they helped open his eyes to the possibility of a career in the arts.

The Bronx native studied acting at HB Studio before enrolling in the film program at the School of Visual Arts. When film school proved too expensive, he dropped out and found work in the lighting department, taking advantage of the indie-film boom of the early 2000s. “I really learned how to light while working for young DPs in New York,” he says.

He got his first break as a cinematographer when a friend was asked to shoot a music video in Tanzania at the last minute, but didn’t have a passport. Branco, who was gaffing at the time, had one, so he got the job. The music video was the biggest production he’d ever worked on, and it gave him a calling card.

Branco received an ASC Spotlight Award nomination for Story Ave, and his feature credits also include the Sundance Film Festival award winners Clemency and The 40-Year-Old Version. His TV credits include Let the Right One In, Bupkis and Monarch. He was named an AC Rising Star of Cinematography in 2020 and one of Variety’s “10 Cinematographers to Watch” in 2019.
