On the closing evening of this year's Cannes Film Festival, the Pierre Angénieux Tribute — named after the creator and manufacturer of the stalwart French lens outfit Angénieux — was awarded to Dion Beebe, ASC, ACS, in recognition of the cinematographer's career achievements.

To mark the occasion, Angénieux president Emmanuel Sprauel and actor Carole Bouquet presented Beebe with an Optimo Ultra Compact 21-56mm FF zoom lens, which was specially engraved with the cinematographer's name. Following a reel that showcased some of Beebe's landmark films, the ceremony wrapped with a collection of video messages delivered by Beebe's colleagues and friends — among them, directors Gillian Armstrong, Niki Caro, Mira Nair, Jane Campion, Michael Mann, Ang Lee and Rob Marshall; producer Marc Platt; and actors Harvey Keitel, Jaafar Jackson and Tom Cruise.

“I’m sincerely humbled to be joining such an esteemed group of cinematographers and artists who previously received this award — Darius Khondji [ASC, AFC], a genius; Santosh Sivan [ASC, ISC] last year; Ed Lachman [ASC]; Roger Deakins [ASC, BSC]; and of course, Bruno [Delbonnel, ASC, AFC]," said Beebe. "It is really meaningful for me to receive this recognition from Angénieux, [a company that] has been a part of my filmmaking career from the beginning. I’m moved by the fact that this award not only seeks to highlight and elevate the art and the craft of cinematography, but also recognizes a truly international community of filmmakers that connects us all."

A day prior to the celebration, Beebe led a filmmaking masterclass, during which he reflected on his journey to becoming cinematographer, and shared his insights gleaned from shooting under the direction of Campion (Holy Smoke), Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha), Mann (Collateral), Lee (Gemini Man) and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow).
