The Society welcomed a full house to a June 24-28 ASC Master Class focused on shooting film. All lighting demos were shot on 35mm negative with Panavision and Arri cameras.
The opening day included the session “Historical Film Analysis & ASC Camera Collection,” with ASC Museum curator Steve Gainer, ASC, ASK and Roy H. Wagner, ASC. This was followed by a presentation by Kodak vice president and head of motion picture Vanessa Bendetti; the discussion “The Color Science of Film” with FotoKem vice president and principal color scientist Joseph Slomka; and the session “Storytelling Through Lenses,” conducted by Guy McVicker, director of technical marketing, cameras, optics and workflow at Panavision.
The next day featured a presentation on lighting and the use of color charts by Charlie Lieberman, ASC and a lighting demo by Peter Levy, ASC, ACS. Both events took place at MBS Outpost LA.
The following day, the class returned to MBS, where Checco Varese, ASC staged a full day of lighting demos and discussions. MBS also hosted the group the next day, with Robert Elswit, ASC presenting a lighting demo and discussion session.
The final day took the class to FotoKem in nearby Burbank, where each of the primary instructors took part in separate DI sessions with their respective footage to demonstrate the process and complete their desired visual results. In all, it was a unique opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with shooting motion-picture film.
Another ASC Master Class focused on shooting film is set for Oct. 21-25. Details will be posted here when available but registration is open. This topic of instruction is very popular and this upcoming class will likely sell out as space is limited.
