On Saturday, April 5, the Metrograph theater in New York City will host an ASC Presents screening of the 1969 classic Midnight Cowboy, photographed by Adam Holender, ASC. The influential film earned three Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, among other honors, and helped usher in the “New Hollywood” era.

As described in the Metrograph's program:

All-American hillbilly hunk Joe Buck (Jon Voight) leaves Texas for New York City in search of his big break, only to quickly find himself a flat-broke hustler whose only friend is a loudmouth, tubercular con man named Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) who’s even more on the skids than Buck is. A deeply affecting and justly celebrated actors’ duet as well as a time capsule of late-’60s Times Square and downtown bohemia that still speaks volumes about the dirty business of eking out a living in aloud, ugly city that doesn’t know you’re alive and doesn’t care if you die.

Joe Buck (Jon Voight) and con man Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) make for an unlikely pair.

This was the first feature credit for Polish-born Holender, whose effective distillation of the essence of down-and-out NYC in bone-chilling winter doubtlessly led to his hiring onto the subsequent drama Panic in Needle Park (1971).

The film will be projected via 4K DCP, and you can get more details and purchase tickets here. A Q&A with Holender will also take place.

On location in New York City, director John Schlesinger (at camera) confers with actors Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. Af far right is cinematographer Adam Holender, ASC.
