65mm Production on Sinners Detailed in June AC
Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC employs Ultra Panavision 70 and Imax formats for period-horror hit.
The upcoming June issue of American Cinematographer will feature a cover story on the gothic vampire feature Sinners, with director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC detailing the creative decision to shoot the project on 65mm motion-picture film: “[Writer-director] Ryan Coogler wants to push the boundaries when figuring out how to best tell a story,” she explains to AC in the piece, “[and this combination] asks the viewer to really use their eyes and scan the image, going from this very wide landscape to the taller Imax [frame]. You wouldn’t think these formats would work together, but they do. It immerses you in the characters’ mindsets.”

The cinematographer relied on close collaboration with Eastman Kodak, Panavision, Imax and FotoKem to accomplish her work and realize Coogler’s vision.
In this promo, Coogler discusses his approach, why he chose 65mm film, and offers info on where the film can be seen as he intended it to be experienced:
The cinematographer and director previously collaborated on the superhero drama Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (AC Dec. ’22).
