Picture Shop and Barco rolled out the red carpet for a well-attended ASC Night on February 7 at Picture Shop’s Seward Street facility in Hollywood.
During the evening, guests enjoyed custom cocktails and appetizers while exploring a Picture Shop-curated ASC photo gallery, which featured the work of ASC members including Alice Brooks, Stephen Goldblatt, Erik Messerschmidt and Society President Mandy Walker.
As part of the evening, Lawrence Sher, ASC moderated a standing-room only discussion with Picture Shop senior colorist Peter Doyle, during which they explored the evolution of color grading. This concluded with some conversation about AI. “We have been quite successful using machine learning to build object recognition,” Doyle reported, adding, “To clarify, my thing is not about generative AI and creating new imagery. That's a whole other discussion. My thing is really just building tools to be able to manipulate and calibrate imagery that is originated by human beings.” He suggested that object recognition could allow for “a much more tightly controlled way of color grading.”
In another color-grading suite, ASC associate member and Barco head of HDR content workflow Joachim “JZ” Zell showcased the projector maker’s new “HDR by Barco” laser projection (Picture Shop has two such suites) and discussed the potential of HDR in production — when used carefully. “We also don't want to overwhelm the eyes of the audience,” Zell said. “If we stress out the audience with too much 'HDRness,' they have to open and close their iris and eyelids all the time. People get tired and perhaps even a headache. So, we don't need to be 100 percent bright all the time.”
