Jarin Blaschke, ASC is a two-time Academy Award nominee for collaborations with director Robert Eggers, Nosferatu and The Lighthouse. He won an ASC Spotlight Award and Independent Spirit Award for The Lighthouse and received an ASC Award nomination for Nosferatu.
The native of Westminster, California became obsessed with photography at age 11 after his mother gave him a point-and-shoot camera, and his fascination grew through summer workshops in Super8mm animation and night classes in photography. At age 17, he moved to New York to study film at the School of Visual Arts, and he was soon shooting dozens of short films for Columbia University MFA students.

While filming what he calls “low-budget, talky movies in boring white apartments in New York for years and years,” he studied the work of Gordon Willis, ASC, who “really illustrated how fewer shots could actually make a film stronger, not weaker. He was also a two-dimensional, classically modernist seer with a strong, flat, graphic sense.” By the time Blaschke connected with Eggers on The Witch, he had shot several features, but he knew things had changed when he overheard someone discussing The Witch on a public bus.
