Jeremy Benning Welcomed as New ASC Member
The Canadian cinematographer’s credits include Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, the Amazon series Cross, and the Fox/Hulu series Accused.
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Jeremy Benning developed a passion for visual storytelling at a young age. His practice of creating candid street photo essays lead to his studying film, working as a Steadicam operator, and becoming an early adopter of digital capture technologies before becoming an established cinematographer.
Benning’s most recent work includes the Amazon series Cross (for which he is returning for a second season in 2024), the Fox/Hulu crime series Accused, and the upcoming indie feature 40 Acres.
The cinematographer is also known for the sci-fi series The Expanse, which wrapped its sixth and final season in 2021. He was the main cinematographer and visual advisor for the series since its debut in 2015. His other television/streaming credits include episodes of the Amazon Prime series The Boys, the National Geographic Channel mini-series The Long Road Home (working with director Mikael Salomon, ASC), and the Disney + feature Spin (directed by Manjari Makijany).
In 2022, Jeremy shot two episodes of Netflix’s award-winning horror anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, “Lot 36” (directed by Guillermo Navarro, ASC) and “The Outside” (directed by Ana Lily Amirpour). For the latter, he earned an ASC Award nomination.
Benning previously won an ASC Award for the period drama Killing Lincoln in 2014.
He has also been honored with a Canadian Screen Award for Best Photography in a Documentary Program for We Were Children, and multiple CSC Award nominations and three wins for Lost in Motion II, We Were Children, Manson and The Great Sperm Race. The latter two projects also received Gemini Award nominations for Best Photography in a Documentary Program or Series.
His 2019 feature documentary Alone Across the Arctic — which he executive produced and shot portions of — won numerous festival awards around the world and is streaming on Amazon Prime and iTunes / Apple TV.
A believer in the importance of well-rounded life experience, Benning is an active member of the Board of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC) and proudly gives back to the LGBTQS+ community.
