Our return to in-person instruction includes a special focus on lighting, color science and working with virtual production techniques, with help from ILM and Monolith Studios.​​

Taking place on May 9-13 in Hollywood, the first ASC Master Class for 2022 features five days of in-depth instruction from Society members and associates. Here are the details on this session:


Historical Film Analysis and ASC Camera Collection 
Taught by: Michael M. Pessah, ASC
A course that examines the history of cinematography that begins with an immersion into modern and artistic technologies. Clips will be accompanied by an examination of some of the historic cameras that recorded the image from The ASC Camera Collection. 


Cameras, Lenses, Sensors and Lighting
Taught by Jay Holben
An ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council (MITC) presented talk focusing on the technical side of creating a screen moment. Topics include sensors, cameras, optics and lighting applications, as well as the use of LUTs, camera controls and how to optimize exposure for results that will carry into post production.

Taught by Ann Murphy
The process of getting an agent, how to plan a career and create needed momentum.

Tuesday Live Lighting Demo at the ASC Clubhouse
Taught by David Stockton, ASC
An eight-time ASC Award nominee, the cinematographer won an ASC Award in 2009 for Eleventh Hour, and subsequently nominated for his camerawork the series NikitaChase, Alcatraz, the Gotham pilot and two subsequent episodes of the stylish show, and Mayans M.C. Starting in the grip and electrical department, Stockton rose up through the ranks and honed his skills in the 1990s and 2000s, shooting music videos and commercials. His credits also include the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Revolution, Astronaut Wives Club, Supergirl and Runaways.


Wednesday Live Lighting Demo at The ASC Clubhouse
Taught by Robert D. Yeoman, ASC
The cinematographer has shot numerous films with director Wes Anderson, including Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch. Yeoman’s other feature credits include Rampage, Drugstore Cowboy, Permanent Midnight, CQ, Martian Child, The Squid and the Whale, Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and  Ghostbusters (2016).


Shooting in a Volume at Monolith Studios
Taught by ILM representatives Chris Bannister and Jonathan Howard
A presentation of virtual production techniques, illustrating concepts behind volume shooting and providing an overview on how DPs can prepare for such a shoot.

In-Camera Process Using The LED Screen Live Lighting Demo at Monolith Studios
Taught by David Klein, ASC and Charlie Lieberman, ASC
Klein gained early experience shooting indie features including Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Vulgar, Fool’s Gold and Clerks II. His other series credits include Gemini Division, Flight 29 Down, Pushing Daisies, True Blood, Six and Law & Order True Crime. His other features include Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out and Red State. He has earned two Emmy nominations for Homeland, as well as an ASC Award nomination for the series. His other recent TV credits include Deadwood (earning another Emmy nomination), The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian.
