Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC, is hosting the ASC Instagram this month. He takes over from Mandy Walker, ASC, ACS, who shared photos with followers throughout November.
An ASC and Academy award nominee for Atonement and Anna Karenina, McGarvey was also behind the camera on the blockbuster action movies The Avengers and Godzilla.
His feature credits also include Pan, Fifty Shades of Grey, We Need to Talk About Kevin (a Camerimage Golden Frog nominee), The War Zone, The Hours and High Fidelity, as well as the recent documentary Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction. He has also shot more than 100 music videos for such artists as U2, Paul McCartney, PJ Harvey and Coldplay.
McGarvey is a patron of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where he has conducted interviews with other cinematographers since 2009. His guests to date: Anthony Dod Mantle, Jack Cardiff, Haskell Wexler, Roger Deakins, Darius Khondji and Chris Menges.
Growing up in Armagh, Northern Ireland, at the height of The Troubles led McGarvey to embrace photography at a young age. “I took refuge behind a camera and in a darkroom as a way of translating the real world through a lens,” he told American Cinematographer. He studied film and photography at The Polytechnic of Central London (since renamed the University of Westminster).
McGarvey recently wrapped Nocturnal Animals for director Tom Ford, and he also shot Gavin O'Connor's The Accountant, which is set for release in 2016.
