MoMI Sets 17-Film Willis Tribute for Jan. 30-March 1
The late Gordon Willis, ASC, will be the focus of a 17-film retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35 Ave., from Jan. 30-March 1.
Presented as part of the museum's popular See It Big! series, the screenings will include an archival 35mm IB Technicolor print of The Godfather Part II, the digital restoration of The Godfather that Willis supervised in 2008, and a 35mm print of Pennies from Heaven restored by the Academy Film Archive. The series will also include a rare screening of End of the Road, Willis' first feature.
With the exception of The Godfather, all presentations will be 35mm prints. Here's the schedule:
Jan. 30: Annie Hall
Jan. 31: End of the Road and The Godfather
Feb. 1: The Godfather Part II
Feb. 20: Manhattan
Feb. 21: The Landlord, Loving and Little Murders
Feb. 22: The Purple Rose of Cairo, Klute and The Parallax View
Feb. 27: All the President's Men
Feb. 28: Interiors, Broadway Danny Rose and Pennies from Heaven
March 1: Zelig, Stardust Memories and Pennies from Heaven
Tickets are included with paid museum admission except on Friday evenings, when tickets cost $12 general admission, $9 for students and senior citizens.
The ongoing See It Big! series celebrates the immersive power of cinema and focuses on select crafts, filmmakers and genres. It's curated by Reverse Shot editors Michael Koresky and Jeff Reichert, MoMI chief curator David Schwartz and MoMI assistant film curator Aliza Ma.
MoMI presented See It Big!: Great Cinematographers in 2013, but the Willis tribute marks the first time a single cinematographer has been the focus of the series.
