Peter Menzies Jr. Welcomed as New ASC Member
The Australian cinematographer is known for his expertise across multiple genres, in feature films and television.
Director of photography Peter Menzies Jr. is an Australian-born cinematographer and internationally known for his body of work which spans more than 30 feature films, as well as television pilots, mini-series and commercials.
Born in Sydney, Australia; Menzies was introduced to the film industry by his father, Australian cinematographer Peter Menzies.
Peter Menzies Jr. is probably most recognized for his work on action-adventure dramas including Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Generals Daughter, Shooter, Four Brothers, Hard Rain and A Time to Kill; and the period films The Thirteenth Warrior, The Great Raid, the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me and the soon-to-be-released drama The Yellow Tie.
Menzies is also well known for his work in the fantasy-action genre and for his expertise in working with visual effects on such projects as The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans, Lara Croft Tomb Raider, Gods of Egypt, Peter Rabbit and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.
On a lighter note, the cinematographer has also enjoyed filming comedies including Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, Playing for Keeps, Kangaroo Jack and Disney’s The Kid.
In television, Menzies brought his cinematic artistry to the landmark re-visualization of the legendary mini-series Roots for directors Bruce Beresford, Thomas Carter and Mario Van Peebles. More recently, Menzies collaborated with director David Nutter on the HBO limited series The Time Travelers Wife.
Menzies established himself as a commercial director of photography in the 1980s and continues to enjoy filming commercials between other projects. His commercial work has earned several honors, including the Australasian Television Award, the New York One Show Prize, the London International Advertising Award and the Cannes Advertising Film Festival Award.
Menzies enjoys the unique director-cinematographer creative collaboration and has worked with a variety of directors, also including John Singleton, Simon West, John McTiernan, Roger Donaldson, Joel Schumacher, Louis Leterrier, John Pasquin, John Dahl, Gabrielle Muccino, Alex Proyas and Mikael Salomon, ASC.
Menzies is married with three daughters and divides his time between his Australian and U.S. residences. He is a keen sailor and sports enthusiast; particularly when it comes to Formula One and international rugby.
Menzies has been a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society since 1996 and is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
