
Schwartzman and Crawley Join October Master Class on Shooting Film
ASC members John Schwartzman and Lol Crawley will bring expert insight to this special session in Los Angeles.
From October 20-24, the ASC will stage a special Master Class education event that will explore the creative and technical facets of shooting on motion-picture film. The discussion may cover the use of 16mm, 35mm and 65mm formats, with seasoned instructors imparting their knowledge and insight. This Master Class will include production — featuring multiple lighting demonstrations — and postproduction, with instruction on working with the lab.
Instructors for this in-person session will include John Schwartzman, ASC and Lol Crawley, ASC, BSC.
Schwartzman's feature credits include Seabiscuit; The Amazing Spider-Man; The Rock, Armageddon and Pearl Harbor for director Michael Bay; The Rookie, Saving Mr. Banks, The Founder, The Highwaymen, The Little Things and Mr. Harrigan's Phone for director John Lee Hancock; Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion and The Book of Henry for director Colin Trevorrow; and A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, The School for Good and Evil and Another Simple Favor for director Paul Feig. For his work on Seabiscuit, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2004.

Crawley's feature credits include Four Lions; White Noise; The Humans; 45 Years; the Camerimage Golden Frog nominee Hyde Park on Hudson; and numerous collaborations with writer-director Brady Corbet, including Vox Lux, The Childhood of a Leader and The Brutalist. For his work on The Brutalist, he received the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2025.

The ASC Master Class is an intensive five-day seminar designed for cinematographers who want to master an intermediate-to-advanced skill set. Instruction takes place in Hollywood and covers lighting and camera techniques and current workflow practices. All necessary equipment is provided.
