ASC Welcomes Paul Meyers as a New Member
Known for his commercial work, the cinematographer has shot for clients including Audi, Toyota, BMW, Vodafone, Johnson & Johnson and more.
As a teen growing up in Provo, Utah, Paul Meyers, ASC developed a budding love for cinema, spending most of his free time photographing and editing short films and documentaries with his childhood friends. He took extra classes and graduated from high school a year early so he could study film at Brigham Young University.
Early in his career, passion projects played a key role in Meyers’ professional development and building a body of work. He teamed up with young directors to produce, photograph and edit various short films, music videos and spec commercials. Since the projects were self-financed between the filmmakers, the budgets were very small, but, Meyers adds, “the scripts were always ambitious and offered new and exciting challenges.” This “DIY education” allowed him to flex creative muscles and continue to hone his craft while learning to be scrappy and efficient. He credits these early personal projects with his love of available light and shooting fast with a small crew.
Meyers’ break came when he was hired to shoot 2nd unit on a national car spot filming in Utah and Los Angeles. Several months later, he was offered to shoot a commercial for Mercedes-Benz, helmed by the same director — this time serving as the director of photography. His memorable work for Acura’s launch of the NSX supercar, followed by campaigns for Audi, BMW and Porsche garnered him international attention and established him as a household name in automotive advertising.
In 2017, when he felt he was becoming too much of an automotive specialist, Meyers took a year off to exclusively pursue other genres of commercial filmmaking. He has since worked with a diverse range of brands and directors across the spectrum of advertising. The cinematographer has photographed over 100 commercials and received best cinematography nominations at Cannes, the AICP, D&AD and Guldägget, among others. His collaborations include work with directors Rune Milton, Cole Webley, Salomon Ligthelm, Tarsem Singh, Rob Chiu, and Sebastian Strasser.
Meyers’ recent projects include two short-form brand films for IWC Schaffhausen, featuring athlete Tom Brady and actor James Marsden.
