, ASC, FSF grew up in Stockholm, Sweden, where he studied graphic design and illustration at the Berghs School of Communication and film at the Stockholm Film School. He started his career as a camera assistant before moving into the role of cinematographer in 1999.
Sandgren’s debut feature was the Swedish fantasy drama Storm, which was critically acclaimed and earned the cinematographer aGuldbagge Award for Best Cinematography.
Two years later, Sandgren relocated to Los Angeles, where he served as director of photography on commercials with directors including, , , , and . For his commercial cinematography, Sandgren has been honored with four among other awards.
For his work on La La Land, Sandgren received the 2016 Academy Award for Best Cinematography in addition to the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography and an ASC Award nomination.
Sandgren is currently in prep to shoot the untitled 25th film in the James Bond franchise, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.
He has been a member of the(FSF) since 2000.
