On Oct. 21-25 the ASC will stage a special Master Class education
event that will focus on the unique attributes of shooting on motion-picture film. The discussion may include 16mm, 35mm and 65mm formats, with seasoned instructors sharing their experience and insight. This Master Class will include production — featuring multiple lighting demonstrations — and post, with instruction on working with the lab.

It was announced today that Autumn Durald Arkapaw and Linus Sandgren have joined ASC members Wally Pfister and Edu Grau to teach this final in-person session of the year.

Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC

After growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Arkapaw attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where she received a BA in art history, and went on to receive her MFA in cinematography at the American Film Institute in 2009. Her credits include the features Palo Alto, One & Two, The Sun Is Also a Star, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the Marvel series Loki, as well as the upcoming feature Sinners. She was invited to join the ASC in 2022.

Linus Sandgren, ASC, FSF

A native of Stockholm, Sandgren started his career as a camera assistant before moving into the role of cinematographer in 1999. In 2012, he was hired by director Gus Van Sant to photograph the feature Promised Land, and since then, he has worked with directors David O. Russell on American Hustle and Joy; Lasse Hallström on The Hundred-Foot Journey and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms; Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris on Battle of the Sexes (AC Podcast episode here); and Damien Chazelle on La La Land, First Man and Babylon. His other recent credits include the James Bond adventure No Time to Die and Saltburn. He became an ASC member in 2019.

Grau’s recent feature credits include the sports drama The Way Back, his first black-and-white picture, Passing, and director Pedro Almodovar’s latest, The Room Next Door, which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival. He was welcomed into ASC membership in 2021.

Pfister earned an Academy Award and an ASC Award for his camerawork in the imaginative sci-fi thriller Inception. He was previously nominated by both AMPAS and the ASC for the superhero features Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and earned another Oscar nomination for the period mystery The Prestige.

Additional ASC members will teach specific components of the class, as well as attend as Ambassadors and be available to answer questions from students. They will include ASC President Shelly Johnson, First Vice President Charlie Lieberman and James Friend.

The ASC Master Class is an intensive five-day seminar designed for
cinematographers who want to master an intermediate-to-advanced skill set. Instruction takes place in Hollywood and covers lighting and camera techniques and current workflow practices. All necessary equipment is provided.
