39th ASC Awards LiveBlog

Reporting from the ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography with updates as they happen during the ceremony taking place tonight at the Beverly Hilton.

6:00pm - The host of this year’s ceremony is actor Ed Helms, back for a second year with the ASC's annual ceremony. During the very first ASC Awards, staged back in 1987 at the ASC Clubhouse with just about 100 people in attendance, Gregory Peck was our MC... Tonight, we have an audience of more than 1,000, with nominees, honorees and supporters joining us...

7:05pm - ASC Awards Committee Chair Chuck Minsky introduces the opening show reel — celebrating widescreen cinema.

This was the third ASC Award nomination for Elswit, following Good Night, and Good Luck and There Will Be Blood. He won ASC and Academy awards for the latter. His feature credits include Boogie Nights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Michael Clayton, The Town, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, Nightcrawler, Inherent Vice and King Richard.

7:30pm - Up next is the Career Achievement in Television Award, presented to Michael Goi, ASC, ISC, by writer-director-producer Randal Kleiser and actor-producer Diane Baker.

7:47pm - Next up is the Episode of a Half-Hour Series Award The category is sponsored by Nanlux, with the award presented by director Jennifer Arnold and Patti Lee, ASC.

This was the cinematographer’s third ASC Award nomination, following two for episodes of Manhattan (“Perestroika” and “Jupiter”). His credits include the series Divorce, Boss, Falling Water, The Americans, Castle Rock, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Masters of the Air. He has also earned an Emmy nomination for this episode.

7:58pm - The Curtis Clark ASC Technology Award — sponsored by Picture Shop — is now being presented to Pete Romano, ASC for his contributions to underwater cinematography, both as an inventor and a director of photography, given to him by his former camera assistant, current collaborator, and friend Cynthia Pusheck, ASC.

8:12pm - The Spotlight Award — sponsored by Panavision — brings to light smaller feature projects that deserve attention. The prize will be presented by ASC members Dean Cundey and John Conroy.

Jomo Fray

A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Fray’s credits include the features The Young Wife, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Runner, No Future, Port Authority and Selah and the Spades; episodes of Random Acts of Flyness and The Underground Railroad; and commercials for Nike, Dove, Tumi and Levi’s. He was named an American CinematographerRising Star of Cinematography” in 2022. This was his first ASC Award nomination and win.

8:22pm - Joan Churchill, ASC is now being presented with the inaugural Lifetime Documentary Award for her outstanding body of non-fiction work. Handing her the trophy is another legend in the documentary realm, Buddy Squires, ASC.

8:36pm - Up now is the Documentary Award — sponsored by Canon — presented by ASC members Shana Hagan and Ava Berkofsky, who have both worked extensively in the non-fiction realm.

Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw

This was the second ASC Award nomination and second win for the filmmakers, who shared the prize in this category in 2021 for The Truffle Hunters.


Dweck is a filmmaker and visual artist whose multi-media work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world. His credits include the documentary feature The Last Race, which Kershaw produced and shot.


Kershaw has photographed and directed documentaries exploring the complexity of humans confronting an ever-changing world. They were both 2019 fellows at the Sundance Institute Catalyst Forum and Sundance Music and Sound Design Lab.

8:45pm - John Simmons, ASC is now accepting the Presidents Award, not only for his outstanding career behind the camera, but for his long history of leadership in the Society and his role as a mentor for countless filmmakers. It is being presented by one of Simmons' many mentees, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young, ASC.

9:05pm - Richard Crudo, ASC is presenting the Bud Stone Award — which is a complete surprise for the honoree...

...and the surprise honoree this year is Suzanne Lezzotte.

9:12pm - Next up is the ASC’s Music Video Award — a new category launched last year and sponsored by Red Digital Cinema. The presenters are songwriter Sofia Isella and her proud father, Claudio Miranda, ASC.

This was the second ASC Award nomination for Avila del Pino, following one in 2018 for the series The Deuce. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he got his big break when actor Logan Marshall-Green recommended him to director Greg Yaitanes for the series Quarry. His credits include episodes of Ozark, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, Impulse, Dave and House of the Dragon. He has also shot other videos for Residente, including “Rap Bruto,” “Quiero ser Baladista” and “Problema Cabrón.”

9:18pm - Producer and studio executive Kathleen Kennedy is now accepting the ASC’s Board of Governors Award, presented to her by Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS – who collaborated with her on projects including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Mandalorian.

9:29pm - Next up is the category Episode of a One-Hour Regular Series Award, sponsored by Panavision and presented by Patrick Cady, ASC and actor-director Titus Welliver – collaborators on the series Bosch and Bosch: Legacy.
