ASC members Caleb Deschanel and Robert Legato recently visited the ASC Clubhouse for a discussion with American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill on their latest collaboration, The Lion King.
The film is a photorealistic computer-generated reimagining of the classic Disney animated feature. Deschanel served as the director of photography, and Legato served as the visual effects supervisor. While Legato had previous experience on similar photorealistic Disney projects — he served as visual effects supervisor on The Jungle Book — this was a first for Deschanel.

Edward Lachman, ASC recently visited the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood for a conversation with filmmaker and American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill about his latest project, Dark Waters.
The feature is a legal thriller based on the 2016 New York Times Magazine article, “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare,” and details environmental attorney Robert Bilott (portrayed by Mark Ruffalo) as he uncovers a connection between a number of unexplained deaths to one of the world’s largest corporations.

Lawrence Sher, ASC visited the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood for a discussion with longtime American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill about his award-winning camerawork in Joker.
The critically acclaimed project is a psychological thriller and drama that provides an origin story for the infamous DC Comics villain. Joker marks the first R-rated picture to earn $1 billion, is the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, and, in terms of budget-to-gross ratio, is the most profitable comic book–based movie.

Cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC during a “Clubhouse Conversations” presentation event discusses his work on the sports drama Ford v Ferrari — his latest collaboration with director James Mangold.
Ford v Ferrari is a based on the remarkable true story of the visionary American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and the fearless British-born driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale), who together battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford Motor Company and take on the dominating race cars of Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966.

Rachel Morrison, ASC recently visited the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood for a discussion with longtime American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill about her recent feature project Seberg.
The film is a political thriller/drama directed by Benedict Andrews and is centered on Breathless actress Jean Seberg as she is targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO surveillance program.

Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC visited the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood this week for a discussion with filmmaker and American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill about his work on the epic crime drama The Irishman.
Directed by Martin Scorsese, the picture marks the third collaboration between him and Prieto. Their other features are The Wolf of Wall Street and Silence. Prieto’s credits include Brokeback Mountain, Babel, Frida and Argo.

Steve Yedlin, ASC recently visited the historic ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood for a discussion about his work on the comedic crime drama Knives Out. Yedlin was joined by longtime collaborators Rian Johnson and colorist Aidan Stanford of FotoKem's Keep Me Posted. The conversation was led by frequent American Cinematographer contributor Jim Hemphill.
Knives Out is a modern take on a whodunit mystery of a family gathering gone awry following the patriarch’s death. Written and directed by Johnson, the picture was photographed on an Arri Alexa Mini with Zeiss Master Primes and Panasonic zoom lenses.
