39th Annual ASC Awards — Meet the Nominees
Exceptional cinematography is honored by the ASC in seven categories. So who are the contenders?
The 39th Annual ASC Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography will take place on the evening of Feb. 23. The ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with returning show host Ed Helms and livestreamed on our site.

Our seven honorees for 2025 will also be feted during the show: Andrzej Bartkowiak, ASC; Michael Goi, ASC, ISC; John Simmons, ASC; Joan Churchill, ASC, Pete Romano, ASC; and Kathleen Kennedy (full announcement here.)
The nominees in seven competition categories were announced on Jan. 16 (details here), honoring exceptional camerawork in feature films, documentaries, television/streaming, and music videos. Below are biographical briefs on all of the nominees, in their respective categories.

Photographer: Dan Winters Life is Once. Forever
Michael Crommett
In addition to promotional work for Ad Council, UNESCO, MoMA and others, his credits include Space Shuttle Columbia: The Final Flight, Leguizamo Does America, Unprecedented, Inside the Met and the Emmy-winning Humans of New York: The Series, which he also produced, and the documentary features Going Varsity in Mariachi, Aftershock and Koshien: Japan’s Field of Dreams. This is his first ASC Award nomination.


Porcelain War
Andrey Stefanov
This is Stefanov’s first ASC Award nomination and his first major credit as a cinematographer. A Ukrainian fine-art painter by training, he began filming the Russian invasion of his country as a collaborative project with sculptor Slava Leontyev, who co-directed this film with Brendan Bellomo. Porcelain War won the Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, among many other honors, and is nominated for an Academy Award.


Gaucho Gaucho
Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw
This is the second ASC Award nomination for the filmmakers, who shared the prize in this category in 2021 for The Truffle Hunters. Dweck is a filmmaker and visual artist whose multi-media work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world. His credits include the documentary feature The Last Race, which Kershaw produced and shot. Kershaw has photographed and directed documentaries exploring the complexity of humans confronting an ever-changing world. Dweck and Kershaw were both 2019 fellows at the Sundance Institute Catalyst Forum and Sundance Music and Sound Design Lab.

Masters of the Air, “Part Three”
Adam Arkapaw, ACS
This is the cinematographer’s second ASC Award nomination, following a 2016 win for Macbeth. (He tied with Mátyás Erdély, ASC, HCA for Son of Saul.) Arkapaw won Emmys for Top of the Lake and True Detective. His feature credits include Assassin’s Creed, Animal Kingdom, The Snowtown Murders, The King and The Order.


Interior Chinatown, “Generic Asian Man”
Michael Berlucchi
This is the second ASC Award nomination for the cinematographer, who was previously honored (with Marc Carter) for Mythic Quest. His TV credits include episodes of Time Bandits, Our Flag Means Death, Teenage Bounty Hunters and You’re the Worst.


Ripley, “Lucio”
Robert Elswit, ASC
This is the third ASC Award nomination for Elswit, following Good Night, and Good Luck and There Will Be Blood. He won ASC and Academy awards for the latter. His feature credits include Boogie Nights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Michael Clayton, The Town, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, Nightcrawler, Inherent Vice and King Richard.


The Penguin, “Homecoming”
Jonathan Freeman, ASC
This is Freeman’s ninth ASC Award nomination. He has won the award five times, for Homeland Security, three episodes of Boardwalk Empire, and Game of Thrones. He was also nominated for Taken, Strange Justice and Prince Street. Freeman also won three Emmys for Boardwalk Empire. His recent series credits include Defending Jacob and 3 Body Problem.

Emmanuel Lubezki, ASC, AMC and
Bruno Delbonnel, AFC, ASC
This is Lubezki’s seventh ASC Award nod and Delbonnel’s sixth. Lubezki won for Children of Men, The Tree of Life, Gravity, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Revenant, and was also nominated for Sleepy Hollow. Delbonnel won for A Very Long Engagement and was also nominated for Amélie, Inside Llewyn Davis, Darkest Hour and The Tragedy of Macbeth. Lubezki won Academy Awards for The Revenant, Birdman and Gravity, and Delbonnel earned Academy nominations for Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Inside Llewyn Davis, Darkest Hour and The Tragedy of Macbeth. Delbonnel was honored with the ASC International Award in 2020.


Hold Your Breath
Zoë White, ACS
This is the second ASC Award nomination for the Sydney native, who was previously recognized for The Handmaid’s Tale, “Holly.” She studied at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and gained experience as an assistant and operator while shooting short films. Her other series credits include Westworld, Hit & Run, They Call Me Magic and The Penguin.

Hacks, “Just for Laughs”
Adam Bricker, ASC
This is the fourth ASC Award nomination for Bricker, who was previously nominated for Hacks, “There Is No Line” and “The Click,” and Chef’s Table, “Pizza: Franco Pepe.” The USC Cinematic Arts graduate gained experience working as a gaffer, camera assistant and operator while shooting on the side. His series work includes American Vandal, Brockmire, Sorry for Your Loss and #BlackAF. He earned Emmy nominations for Chef’s Table, “Corrado Assenza,” and Hacks, “Primm” and “The Click.”


The Franchise, “Sc 31A: Tecto Meets Eye”
Carl Herse
This is the third ASC Award nomination for Herse, who also received an Emmy nomination for this episode. The Columbia College graduate won the ASC Award twice for episodes of Barry (“Starting Now” and “Tricky Legacies”). His TV credits include Nathan for You, The Last Man on Earth, Moonbase 8, Black Monday and The Afterparty.


Sugar, “Starry-Eyed”
Richard Rutkowski, ASC
This is the cinematographer’s third ASC Award nomination, following two for episodes of Manhattan (“Perestroika” and “Jupiter”). His credits include the series Divorce, Boss, Falling Water, The Americans, Castle Rock, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Masters of the Air. He also earned an Emmy nomination for this episode.


Emily in Paris, “Masquerade”
Seamus Tierney
The AFI graduate’s credits include the features Hubie Halloween, Brittany Runs a Marathon, Liberal Arts, Happythankyoumoreplease, Adam and The Narrows and episodes of The Mill, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Uncoupled, You, Animals and Cold Case Files. This is Tierney’s first ASC Award nomination.


Only Murders in the Building, “Once Upon a Time in the West”
Kyle Wullschleger
A self-professed “wildlife nut” Wullschleger has degrees in journalism and biology. He stepped up to director of photography on Awkwafina is Nora from Queens after operating Steadicam for episodes of Saturday Night Live, Project Runway All-Stars, Broad City, Russian Doll and Mare of Easttown, among other projects. This is his first ASC Award nomination.

The Girl with the Needle
Michal Dymek
A graduate of the Łódź Film School in Poland, Dymek won the Camerimage Golden Frog for his work on this film. His feature credits include Pierce, A Real Pain, Unmoored, EO, Wolf and Sweat. This is his first ASC Award nomination.


Nickel Boys
Jomo Fray
A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Fray’s credits include the features The Young Wife, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Runner, No Future, Port Authority and Selah and the Spades; episodes of Random Acts of Flyness and The Underground Railroad; and commercials for Nike, Dove, Tumi and Levi’s. He was named an American Cinematographer “Rising Star of Cinematography” in 2022. This is his first ASC Award nomination.

Nawi
Klaus Kneist and Mwende Renata
This is both cinematographers’ first ASC Award nomination. Kneist’s work includes commercials for BMW, Porsche, Audi, Adobe, L’Oréal, Coca-Cola and O2 and the features Lockdown Movie and Robin: Watch for Wishes.
Renata is a Kenyan director of photography based in Nairobi; this is her first major credit. A former dancer and choreographer, she sought to work behind the camera and gained experience as an AC and operator.

Pepe Avila del Pino, AMC
This is the second ASC Award nomination for Avila del Pino, following one in 2018 for the series The Deuce. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he got his big break when actor Logan Marshall-Green recommended him to director Greg Yaitanes for the series Quarry. His credits include episodes of Ozark, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, Impulse, Dave and House of the Dragon. He has also shot other videos for Residente, including “Rap Bruto,” “Quiero ser Baladista” and “Problema Cabrón.”


“Rebound,” performed by Jennifer Lopez
Scott Cunningham, ASC
This is the second ASC Award nomination for Cunningham, who was nominated in this category last year for “Gorilla,” performed by Little Simz. An avid photographer from an early age, he launched his cinematography career after spending two decades as a line producer on commercials and music videos. He received Camerimage Golden Frog nominations for Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” Harry Styles’ “Falling” and Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits.” He won MTV Video Music Awards for “Humble” and Shawn Mendes’ “Señorita” and was also nominated for Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry” and Camila Cabello’s “My Oh My.”

Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC
This is the cinematographer’s sixth ASC Award nomination, following nods for the features Frida, Brokeback Mountain, Silence, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon. He also received Academy Award nominations for the latter four films. His credits include the features Amores Perros, 8 Mile, 25th Hour, 21 Grams, Alexander, Babel, Argo, The Wolf of Wall Street and Barbie and the pilot for Vinyl. He won a 2024 Camerimage Golden Frog for this video. He also shot Swift’s video for “The Man,” which the singer directed as well.

The Crown, “Sleep, Dearie Sleep”
Adriano Goldman, ASC, ABC, BSC
This is Goldman’s fourth ASC Award nomination. He won for his work on The Crown in 2018 and 2019 and was also nominated for the show in 2021. He also won two Emmys for his work on The Crown. His other credits include the features Jane Eyre (2011) and August: Osage County, and episodes of the Star Wars series Andor.


House of the Dragon, “The Queen Who Ever Was”
Catherine Goldschmidt, BSC
This is Goldschmidt’s second ASC Award nomination, following one for this show in 2023. She has also received an Emmy nomination for her work on the series. Her TV credits include The Last of Us, Doctor Who, Mind/Trip, Chloe and Renegade Neil. She was named an American Cinematographer “Rising Star of Cinematography” in 2022.


Silo, “The Engineer”
Baz Irvine, BSC, ISC
After moving to London, this Belfast native came up as an assistant for Barry Ackroyd, BSC; Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC and others. His cinematography credits include the features Mr. Bean’s Holiday and The Lives of Saints and episodes of Invasion, Ten Percent, Manhunt, The Pembrokshire Murders, Wild Bill, Trauma, Safe House, and MI-5. This is Irvine’s first ASC Award nomination.


House of Dragon, “Rhaenyra the Cruel”
Alejandro Martínez, ASC, AMC
This is Martínez’s second ASC Award nomination for this series. The Mexico City native is known for his collaborations with Spanish director Gabe Ibáñez, including the features Hierro and Autómata. He received a Goya nomination for the latter. His series credits include The Alienist: Angel of Darkness; The Mosquito Coast; and Fallout.


Shōgun, “Crimson Sky”
Sam McCurdy, ASC, BSC
The cinematographer also won an Emmy for this episode. His credits include multiple features with director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday and Centurion) and episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Carnival Row, Peacemaker, Lost in Space and Game of Thrones. This is his first ASC Award nomination.


Shōgun, “Anjin”
Christopher Ross, BSC
Ross also received an Emmy nomination for this episode. His credits include the features The Great Escaper, The Swimmers, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Cats, Yesterday, Terminal, Oasis, The Sense of an Ending and Eden Lake and episodes of The Day of the Jackal, Trust, Top Boy, Blackout and Misfits. He is the current president of the BSC. This is his first ASC Award nomination.

Nosferatu
Jarin Blaschke
This is the second ASC Award nomination for Blaschke, who was previously recognized for The Lighthouse. Prior to his work as a cinematographer, he was a photojournalist and lighting designer for Vanity Fair and GQ. His commercial work includes spots for Calvin Klein, IBM, Dior, Heineken, Converse, Reebok and Atlantic Records. His other credits include the features The Witch, Shimmer Lake, I Believe in Unicorns, Fray and The Northman, and the series The Servant. He also earned an Oscar nomination for this film.


Wicked
Alice Brooks, ASC
A native of New York and a graduate of USC’s Film & Television Production MFA program, Brooks’ credits include the features Jem and the Holograms, Queen Bees, In the Heights, tick, tick… BOOM! and the forthcoming sequel Wicked: For Good and the series Home Before Dark. This is Brooks’ first ASC Award nomination.


The Brutalist
Lol Crawley, BSC
This is the second ASC Award nomination for Crawley, who was nominated in 2016 for the feature The Childhood of a Leader. His credits include the documentaries One Night in Turin, From the Ashes and Shadow Kingdom; the series Turn: Washington’s Spies, Utopia, The OA and Black Mirror; and the features The Secret Garden (2020), The Humans and White Noise. He also earned an Oscar nomination for this film.


Conclave
Stéphane Fontaine, AFC
The cinematographer began his career as a 1st AC to Jean-Yves Escoffier; Eric Gautier, AFC; and Frederick Elmes, ASC, among others. His credits include the features Ammonite, My Zoe, The Kill Team, Jackie, Elle, Captain Fantastic, Rust and Bone, A Prophet, and The Beat That My Heart Skipped. This is his first ASC Award nomination.


Dune: Part Two
Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS
This is the fifth ASC Award nomination for Fraser, who studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He won ASC Awards for Lion and Dune: Part One and won an Academy Award for the latter. He also earned ASC nominations for The Mandalorian and The Batman; he won an Emmy for the former. His credits include the features Zero Dark Thirty, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Snow White and the Huntsman, Vice and The Creator. He also earned an Oscar nomination for this film.


Maria
Edward Lachman, ASC
This is the Lachman’s fifth ASC Award nomination, following Far from Heaven, Mildred Pierce (2011), Carol and El Conde. His feature credits include Desperately Seeking Susan, Less Than Zero, Mississippi Masala, The Limey, The Virgin Suicides, Erin Brockovich, I’m Not There, Wonderstruck and Dark Waters. He was honored with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. He also earned an Oscar nomination for this film.

Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC, GCA
The is the sixth ASC Award nomination for Papamichael, who was previously recognized for the TV productions Wild Palms and White Dwarf and the features Nebraska, Ford v Ferrari and The Trial of the Chicago 7. His feature credits include Sideways, 3:10 to Yuma (2007), The Monuments Men, The Ides of March, Walk the Line, Downsizing and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
